Stack Molds are a series of molding faces “stacked” together to create multiple faces or levels for molding. Each level or face is a parting line and produces molded product.

The benefit of stack molding is to increase the output of a given molding machine and operation. In many cases, parts with a large projected area can be converted or built in a stack mold configuration, doubling the output of a given machine.

The advantage of the cube technology over other mold technologies is that the number of cavities for the same machine size can be doubled. Or in other words: for the same production lot, the size of the machine is almost halved.

In the stack turning technology, the mold rotation is performed with a horizontal rotary device in the form of a center plate. Plastic parts are produced in the first parting plane. When the mold is opened, they remain on the side of the moving center plate. For a fully opened mold, the center plate is rotated 180° and placed in the second parting plane. After closing again, the second component is injected in the second cavity where the parts are located on the center block.

When using stack-turning molds with 4 × 90° rotation, stations 2 (operator side) and 4 (non-operator side) can be simultaneously used for further production steps.

For example, station 2 can be used for cooling the molded parts and station 4 can be used for removal by a robotic system. Both functions take place without affecting the cycle time. Alternatively, station 2 can also be used for mounting (in-mold assembly) inside and outside the system.

Cube mold technology is distinct from traditional co-injection, because an inner layer is initially molded on one side of the cube, then rotated 180 degrees where the outer layer is over-molded. Both molding stages operate as conventional injection molding processes, which is simpler to set up, maintain, and run continuously in comparison to a more complex co-injection system. mold construction design for core toggle multi shot molding

We have discussed the rotary table multi shot mold and rotary shaft multi shot mold before, so today we will talk about the two-color injection of the core toggle mold!

The core toggle multi shot molding process is the easiest, because the core and cavity of the mold do not need to be moved. Conversely, changing the geometry of the mold cavity by moving the slider. Check below pictures:

First inject material A into the cavity, at the same time the slider is in the fully extended position!

Then retracting the slider to reveal a new portion of the cavity!

After that, material B is injected into the reconfigured cavity through a separate gate (above the middle nozzle), the remaining gap is filled by moving the slider!

Then the plastic part hardens and ejected from the mold. Sequentially circulated as the above to continue the molding!

Adding a slider to the mold adds the cost of the tool, but it still can be much more cheaper than rotating platen or rotary shaft mold. Unfortunately, it can not produce the complex multi colored plastic parts.

In the past, a multi materials part was done by using additional secondary services or more complex assemblies. However, today’s multi materials injection molding largely eliminates these additional requirements, making it much more easier to manufacture complex finished parts, faster and cheaper.

According to moving different molded parts can be divided into:

1.      Rotary platen multi shot molding

2.      Rotary shaft multi shot molding

3.      Core toggle multi shot molding

Rotary Platen Multi Shot Molding

The mold core plate contains two identical cores that are mirrored on the centerline of the platen and coincide with the axis of rotation. The cavity plate connected to the fixed platen contains two cavities with different geometries. In each cycle, the rotary platen completes the switching of the molded parts, and eliminates the need for manual switching.

Here we only show the two materials mold, which can actually accommodate more materials. The rotary platen can be rotated by 90°, 120° or 180° depending on the amount of material used. Also it will need a special injection machine to provide the required rotation on the core side.
